Travel Bogota This photo provided by the Museo del Oro in Bogota, Colombia, shows a Gold funerary mask from the Yotoco Period (100 BC to 800 AD), part of an exhibit: “Spirit of Ancient Colombian Gold” at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington. A symbol of power and beauty, gold was thought by some ancient people to be a gift of the sun itself. The exhibit looks at how people of what is now Colombia used gold for ornament and ceremony. Tattooed human skin, part of a medical oddity collection held at The Medical Pathology Museum of Tokyo University in Japan. Dr. Masaichi Fukushi was a pathologist, interested in the art of Japanese tattooing. Fukushi would perform autopsies on donated cadavers and remove just the skin. He created methods of treatment to preserve the skin and kept them stretched in a glass frame, essentially like a leather. The Medical Pathology Museum at Tokyo University has 105 in its collection, many with full body suits.
